Suspend border fencing, Myanmar's anti-junta 'govt-in-exile' tells India

GUWAHATI: Myanmar’s anti-junta “govt-in-exile” National Unity Govt (NUG) has asked India to suspend ongoing fencing of the border between two countries after Assam Rifles shot dead 10 cadres of its armed wing, People’s Democratic Organisation, in a firefight in Manipur’s Chandel on May 14.The NUG said India must halt border fencing activities as they are “unilateral” and are “in areas where the boundary remains unresolved”. The parallel govt also demanded India probe the incident and compensate the families of the 10 killed.India’s defence PRO and spokesperson for Manipur, Nagaland and Southern Arunachal Pradesh said on Thursday that on May 14 an Assam Rifles patrol sanitising the area near the India-Myanmar border, where fence construction is underway, came under intense automatic fire from armed cadres. “Clearly, the likely intent of the cadres was to cause severe harm to construction workers or troops of Assam Rifles to deter the fencing work,” he said. The PRO said Indian security forces, while operating on their own side of the international border, responded with professionalism and tactical precision, neutralising 10 cadres and recovering a huge cache of automatic weapons and other war-like stores. The NUG’s ministry of foreign affairs has said the deceased were not insurgents operating against India and emphasised the need for cooperation between the two countries.
